*18 January 2012* *THIRUVANANTHAPURAM :* The State capital will play host to ‘Ayurveda Keralam,' a global Ayurveda festival intended to mainstream Ayurveda as Kerala's authentic system of medicine and create more awareness of this age-old system.
The event, to be held from February 9 to 14 at Kanakakkunnu Palace, is being organised by the Centre for Innovation in Science and Social Action (CISSA), in association with the State government and the Ayurveda medical fraternity in the State. At a press briefing here, the former Directors of Ayurveda Medical Education P. Sankaran Kutty and M.R. Vasudevan Nampoothiri and CISSA general secretary C.S. Sureshkumar said the potential of Ayurveda in the management of lifestyle diseases would be one of the predominant themes for discussion at the fete as the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases was emerging as a major public health problem in the State. *Awareness creation* “The authentic Ayurveda system of medicine has a lot to offer in the management of lifestyle diseases. But there is little public awareness of this side of Ayurveda, and there is a lot of quackery in this area. It will be our attempt to bring before the people the potential of Ayurveda medicine in the control and treatment of non-communicable diseases,” Dr. Sureshkumar said. Over 2,500 delegates from across India and abroad will participate in an international seminar on ‘Ayurveda for Non Communicable Diseases.' *Themes* The major themes at the seminar will include diabetes, hypertension and coronary heart disease, liver disorders, neurological disorders, pulmonary diseases, mental disorders, obesity, cancer, and degenerative diseases. *Food carnival* A mega national exhibition on Ayurveda with more than 350 stalls; Ayurveda specialty clinics of renowned physicians; patient awareness workshops; public education pavilions showcasing the goodness of Ayurveda that will be put up by all 17 Ayurveda colleges in the State, each college focussing on various specialties such as fracture management or treatment of mental illnesses; showcasing of various research and development facilities in Ayurveda; Ayurveda and ethnic food carnival; and an exhibition of the medicinal plant diversity in the country are part of the event. *Ayush clinics* “There will be Ayush clinics on all days of the festival. These will be conducted by renowned Ayurveda physicians, and the public can seek treatment at these clinics. This is, above all, a great opportunity for everyone to know more about Ayurveda and the possibilities it has to offer as a traditional system of medicine rather than as a quick fix for cosmetic problems,” Dr. Sankarankutty said. Those who will participate in the international seminar include B.M. Hegde, former Vice-Chancellor of Manipal University; Madan Thangavelu, a research fellow in oncology from the University of Cambridge; R.H. Singh, chairman of the Ayush Innovation Council of the Union government; Mark Rosenberg, CEO of the European Academy of Ayurveda in Germany; Bhushan Patwardhan, Vice Chancellor of Symbiosis International University, Pune; K. Satyamoorthy, Director of Manipal Life Sciences Centre; and Horst Przuntek, Professor of Neurology at Ruhr University, Germany.
