Pravin Masurkar told the police that his wife Prachi was mentally ill for
four years; he had to bear educational expenses of three children and was
under debt

AHMEDABAD : Odhav police have arrested autorickshaw driver Pravin
Masurkar for killing his wife and daughter on Sunday. The accused, who was
missing after murdering the mother-daughter duo, was arrested from Umrada
in Udaipur.

On January 20, 40-year-old Prachi Masurkar and her 17-year-old daughter
Sonu were found dead in their house in Odhav. The police said they traced
Pravin through his cellphone.

During interrogation, Pravin said, “My wife was suffering from mental
illness for the past four years. I had to spend a lot of money on her
medicines. But they were of no use. Many a time, she would sleep for hours
together. Also, I had to bear the educational expenses of our three
children and was already under debt of Rs 25,000. I was worried that if I
told this to Prachi, her condition may worsen. So I strangulated her and
our daughter.”

Explaining further he said, “I waited for my two children to come home. We
had our dinner together.”

At first, Pravin had planned to kill his wife and run away. “When I woke up
at 5 am, I thought about my children. My eldest daughter Snehal was
well-settled. I knew my son Yogesh would find his way out. But when I
thought about Sonu, I felt that her life would be ruined. So I decided to
kill her as well,” he said.

However, next day he continued his routine work. Without even a hint of
remorse, Pravin said, “I went to the kitchen and prepared tea. Just then,
Yogesh woke up. I gave him Rs 50 and told him to bunk the school that day
and enjoy. As soon as he left, I too left the house.”

*AHMEDABAD* : Odhav police on Sunday arrested Pravin Mushadkar, accused of
double murder of his wife and daughter, from Udaipur. Fear of poverty and
mounting debt forced Mushadkar to take this extreme step, the ghastliness
of which left Amdavadis shell-shocked.

The police traced Mushadkar with the help of call records from his
cellphone. He has allegedly told cops that he had taken a loan of Rs28,000
whose payment and mounting interest were taking a toll on him as he could
in no way pay off the debt.

"He was afraid that if his wife came to know of the debt, she would kill
herself. He told us that she was mentally unstable and news of the debt
would shock her and thus he spared her the agony by killing her himself in
the morning," said PS Goswami, police inspector with Odhav Police.

The cop further said that Mushadkar then went to have dinner with his
daughter and son and soon killed the girl as well.

"Mushadkar was afraid that his daughter, a class XII student, would have a
difficult time with her mother dead and the father in jail. So, he killed
her too," said Goswami.

The accused, who was an autorickshaw driver, gave his 13-year-old son Rs50
to buy something and fled to Udaipur. "It was the son who discovered the
murders and called up police," said Goswami.
