*24-Jan-2012* * * *Indore *: An elderly heart patient, who was subjected to drug trial at the MY hospital, has allegedly become mentally disturbed. Kin of Nirajanlal Pathak (85), resident of Malwa mill area, have complained to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) that the clinical trials made him mentally unstable.
Alok Hirachand Pathak has alleged that only after reading media reports he learnt that drug trial was conducted on his uncle, leading to his mental illness. He alleged that in 2008, Niranjan Pathak had a cardiac problem and was taken to MY hospital's medicine department for treatment. Dr Sonal Pagare informed them about a project and said if they get involved in it, the treatment will be provided free of cost. It was said the project was being run by the government. Pathak alleged that they were taken in by the offer and signed on several papers given by the doctors. The doctors also instructed that the prescriptions given by them should not be disclosed to anyone. They also asked us to bring back strips of medicines given to them. The patient was admitted at the VIP ward of the hospital and was treated for around a week. The doctors who did the treatment included Dr Anil Bharani, Dr Apurva Pauranik and Dr Riyaz, alleged Pathak. Later, the patient started losing memory. Now, he is not able to recognise anyone. Doctors have discontinued medicines to the patient. Alok Pathak has urged the NHRC to recommend compensation to the family. NGO Swastha Adhikar Manch has also complained in this regard to the rights panel. "Doctors should be suspended and attached to other colleges. A fair probe should be constituted. Imposing a monetary fine is not enough.
