*12-FEB-2012* *CHENNAI* : The Madras High Court has directed the authorities to produce a woman life convict, now lodged in the Central Prison, Vellore, before the court on February 24. A Division Bench comprising Justices K. Mohan Ram and G.M. Akbar Ali passed the order on a habeas corpus petition filed by P. Pugalenthi, Director, Prisoners Rights Forum, Chennai.
The petitioner, an advocate, said when he visited the Special Prison for Women, Vellore, to meet his client, S.Nalini Sriharan, a life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, she informed him that one Pakka alias Vijaya, who was mentally ill, was in prison without proper treatment or counselling. A life convict, she was in prison for the past 21 years. Her husband was also a life convict. Both had been convicted in a murder case. Mr. Pugalenthi said none of the relatives of the couple was of any help to them. Pakka was unable to talk. The authorities had not considered her for premature release. The petitioner prayed the court for production of the woman before the court and a direction to the authorities to consider her for premature release immediately. The Bench directed the prosecutor to file a copy of the report of the Probation Officer and the District Collector. The woman should be assessed by a qualified psychiatrist attached to the CMC, Vellore. A report should be filed.
