*13-FEB-2012* *RAICHUR* : Karnataka High Court judge N. Kumar said that those with mental illnesses are disabled, but they too have the right to enjoy human rights. The judges should recommend that they be provided the necessary medical treatment if case they have to face trial in court, he said. *‘Protect their rights'* Inaugurating a workshop on mental health awareness here on Sunday, he said that judges should give priority to providing medical treatment if persons with mental illness were produced before the court. It was their responsibility to protect the rights of such persons and any delay would cause further deterioration of their health. The programme was organised by the Karnataka State Mental Health Authority, the district judiciary, the district administration, the zilla panchayat and the District Health and Family Welfare Department. On the incidence of married couples seeking divorce on the grounds of mental instability, he said that either the wife or the husband seeks divorce by claiming that the other spouse was mentally instable. The provision of mental instability as grounds for allowing divorce was being misused, he said. Mr. Kumar said that about 10 per cent of the total population in the world suffers from mental illness. Of this, one per cent had severe mental illness. http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-karnataka/article2887319.ece -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Mental Health Advocacy (News 'N Views) India" group.
