DINDIGUL : Welfare aid and equipment worth Rs.2.06 crore were distributed to
3,587 differently abled persons in the district this year. A special scheme is
being launched to detect mental disorders among children at an early stage at
an estimated cost of Rs.1.58 crore, said Collector N. Venkatachalam.
He was distributing welfare aid to differently abled persons at a function held
here on Friday.
A centre for mental health was set up in Kodaikanal Government hospital to
identify children with disorders in remote and interior villages and treat them
at early stage. To detect such cases and to identify differently abled persons
and to take government schemes to them, the district administration has deputed
413 village level field staff in all 19 unions.
Early detection will help doctors start rehabilitation measures quickly. Rate
of recovery will be more in case of early detection, he pointed out.
In 2011-12, welfare aid and equipment worth Rs.3.89 crore were given to 5,849
beneficiaries. National identity cards had been given to 23,445 persons
including 12,350 for persons with physical deformities, 3,402 mentally retarded
children, 1,651 visually impaired, 3,502 deaf and 586 spastic children so far.
Four gram gold with Rs.25,000 cash for marriage assistance, motor fitted
vehicles for differently abled students and relaxation of age limit for getting
pension were some of the major welfare schemes for differently abled persons.
They should come forward to avail these schemes fully and use them for their
uplift. NGOs, clubs and other voluntary organisations in rural areas should
guide differently abled persons to avail these schemes, the Collector added.
Later, he disbursed welfare aid and offered equipment like crutches, artificial
limb and wheel chair worth Rs.1.95 lakhs to 14 beneficiaries.
