KOTTAYAM : The glorification of masculinity by the media has been a major
reason in cases of domestic violence and sexual abuse, according to Varghese
Punnoose, Professor and Head, Department of Psychiatry, Alappuzha Medical
College.
He was delivering a presentation during a seminar that was jointly organised by
Spirituality, Life and Mental Health Movement (SAMM) and BCM College Women’s
Forum here on Tuesday. Dr. Punnoose said the media generally portray males to
be superior through its various programmes. “The frequent practice of depicting
domestic violence through serials and similar shows have instilled among many
that they signified male supremacy. The dangerous trend has played a
significant role in similar occurrences in society.
He said studies have proven that most sexual offenders did not indulge in
criminal acts seeking sexual pleasure. However, they were mainly influenced by
their urge to display power and anger that are commonly considered to symbolise
masculinity.
