RANCHI : Four new district mental health centres are set to come up in the
state under the National Mental Health Programme (NMHP). These centres will
have OPD facility including psychiatrists, clinical psychiatrists, psychiatric
nurses, record keeper and an assistant providing free consultation, medication
and community outreach programme in adjacent areas.
The four new centres will open in Giridih, Deogarh, Lohardaga and Chaibasa. At
present, these centres are functioning in Dumka (2006), Daltonganj (2009),
Gumla (2009) and Jamshedpur (2011). Under the NMHP, initially the central and
state government will fund the programme, which will be taken over by the state
government fully only after five years. The Ranchi Institute of
Neuro-Psychiatry and Applied Sciences (RINPAS) is the nodal institute for
monitoring the district mental health programme. Amool Ranjan, director, RINPAS
said, "The proposal was made two years back. We expect it to be finalized by
April. OPD is easier to run as full-fledged centres need more manpower and we
do not have manpower. This will also make it convenient for patients to go for
follow-up treatments. Instead of travelling all the way to Rinpas, they can
avail of the facilities nearer home."
He added that the idea is to decentralize the services to build a network so
that people from nearby districts can also visit these centres for their
problems. tnnP Chandra, director-in-chief of health, said, "We will provide the
required support. As of now, Rinpas has demanded training of the staff members,
which was approved by the health department under the National Rural Health
Mission.
