VELLORE : It was an occasion of joy and surprise for the family of Srinivasan
from Oddanthangal village near Katpadi on Friday, when his wife Susheela (45)
who went missing about 11 years ago returned home, thanks to joint efforts of
NGOs in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
Susheela was rescued by Karnataka-based NGO Vishwasada Mane from a bus stand in
Udupi in 2007. She received treatment and gradually began disclosing details of
her family. Deepak Christopher of Vishwasada Mane, said Susheela, who had
identified herself as Shanthi, was unable to give proper directions to her
village, and the assistance of local NGO Udavum Ullangal was sought.
After enquiries, her village was identified as Oddanthangal. When she was taken
to the village, her family was happy to see her. However, Susheela was able to
recognise them. The villagers were also surprised to see her.
Her husband Srinvasan said, “Susheela used to suffer from mental illness and
would go missing but would return. But on one occasion, when she did not
return, they searched for her but were unable to find her. I had lost hope that
I would ever see her again,” he said, adding that he never lodged a police
complaint in this regard. The couple had two sons and a daughter.
Among the others who will be reunited with their families are 58-year-old
Janaki, who has been away from her home in Tanjore for 20 years, Veerasami of
Madurai and Haribabu of Coimbatore.
