26-Mar-2014 KOZHIKODE : Three police personnel, including two women, were suspended from service on the charge of abandoning an 80-year-old mentally challenged woman in the city at midnight on March 15. Those suspended were senior civil police officer P. Premalatha, civil police officer K. Shijina, and police driver K. Moideen Kutty, all attached to the Vanitha police station. Report A.V. George, Commissioner of Police, Kozhikode city, suspended them on the basis of a report submitted by Kasaba Circle Inspector Babu Peringothu. The police said the woman, Sarojini, hailing from Elathur, was found roaming in the city. The local people handed her over to a patrolling women police team who took her away in their jeep. How ever, they abandoned the hapless woman at Thiruvangoor on National Highway, instead of dropping her home. Eyewitnesses Koyilandy Circle Inspector C.R. Haridas and two other police personnel who were on their way to Koyilandy in plain clothes were eyewitnesses to the incident. Later, Mr. Haridas directed the policemen to take Sarojini to the Koyilandy police station. Her relatives were informed, and she was taken home the next day. The statement of the Circle Inspector was taken for the purpose of inquiry. Additional Director-General of Police (North Zone) N. Shankar Reddy also asked for a report after the incident came to light.
