PUNE : After killing her two sons --aged six and three -- a mentally unstable
woman attempted suicide three times, but survived each attempt.
In 31-year-old Ratnamala Rajaram Mane's third attempt at suicide, she had set
herself on fire in Nira village, around 80 kms from Pune, on April 30. Since
then, she has been undergoing treatment at Sassoon General Hospital in Pune.
Ratnamala has been booked under sections 302 (murder) and 309 (attempt to
suicide) of the Indian Penal Code at the Walchandnagar police station, which is
under the jurisdiction of the Pune rural police. She has received 80 per cent
burn injuries.
According to Walchandnagar police, Ratnamala has a sound family background, and
her husband works in a private company. For the past three years, she was being
treated for mental illness at a hospital in Miraj, near Sangli. On April 25,
Ratnamala killed her two sons by throwing them into a well at Lamjewadigaon, on
Bhigwan-Baramati Road in Indapur taluka. She also jumped into the well, but
survived, as the water level in the well was low.
Police Inspector A K Vibhute, in-charge of Walchandnagar police station, said,
"Given her mental illness, Ratnamala was worried about the future of her two
children Rohan and Aditya. This prompted her to kill them, and then attempt
suicide."
"After the children were found dead in the well, Ratnamala went missing. After
the deceased were identified, her husband Rajaram Mane had told us about her
history of mental illness, and had confessed that he suspected her role in
their deaths. After this, a murder case was registered against Ratnamala,"
Vibhute said.
"After the first incident, she had tried to come under a train, but some people
who were passing by saved her. On April 30, she tried to kill herself by
setting herself ablaze on a road in Nira village," said PI Vibhute.
"During investigations, Ratnamala tried to the mislead police. She had told us
that her name was Ashwini Sadashiv Kale and that she hails from Akluj. But
further investigations revealed her real name and her relatives have now
identified her. We are now checking if there were other reasons behind the
killing of the two children," Vibhute added.
