Collector seeks detailed report from centre superintendent
KOZHIKODE: A 46-year-old inmate of the Kuthiravattom Mental Health Centre was
strangled to death, allegedly by another inmate, at the hospital cell on
Sunday. The Medical College police identified the victim as Chukkadan Siddik, a
native of Mambad in Malappuram district.
Following the complaint by hospital authorities, the police registered a case
under Section 302 (punishment for murder) of the IPC against G.O. Zachariya,
the accused in the incident.
The hospital staff told the police that the accused executed the murder after
tying a cloth around the neck of the victim. He was trying to drag the body out
of the cell when the wardens reached the spot hearing loud noise, they told the
police. According to hospital sources, the murder took place around 6 a.m.
There were two other patients in the ward at the time of the incident.
Siddik had been undergoing treatment at the hospital since June 17. The
Nilambur police had brought the man to the hospital for treatment as he was
found suffering from mental illness. Zachariya, the accused in the case, too
was brought to the hospital from Mananthawadi in a similar circumstance. The
hospital authorities and the police were yet to get any clue on how the accused
secured the cloth to attack Siddik.
After conducting the inquest in presence of Magistrate R. Prasannan and
Kozhikode Tahsildar P.M. Kunhappa, the body of the victim was moved to the
Kozhikode Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination. Medical College
Police said the body would be handed over to the relatives after the
post-mortem examinations on Monday.
District Collector C.A. Latha has asked the Superintendent of the Mental Health
Centre to immediately submit a detailed report.
Ms. Latha told The Hindu that the report would include all details about the
current situation at the hospital -- including the available facilities and
limitations. "As it was a murder case, we want to get the post-mortem
examination report first and other inquiry details from the police for any
possible action. Also, we want to have a look at the report from the Hospital
Superintendent," she added.
