MUMBAI : In yet another horrific crime, a 20-year-old mentally ill woman has
become one-and-a-half months pregnant after being raped by an unidentified
person in a chawl at Malad (east). The Dindoshi police investigating the case
is taking help of medical experts to try and get a description of the accused,
but have not got a single lead yet.
According to the Dindoshi police, the rape survivor lives in a chawl with her
elder brother, his wife and children. She came to Mumbai a year ago for
treatment, while her parents still live in their village. She has been mentally
ill since childhood.
It is not clear on what date or place the rape took place as the brother and
his wife both go to work. The matter came to light only after the victim was
taken to a hospital. The doctors there alerted the police control room after
which the Dindoshi police was informed as she lives in their jurisdiction.
An FIR has been registered on Sunday against an unidentified person under
Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code. The survivor has been admitted to a
government-run hospital in Central Mumbai after she suffered labour pains.
The Dindoshi police will collect DNA samples of the child and will trace the
accused with its help. The DNA samples will be sent to the Kalina Forensic Lab.
The rape survivor is unable to provide any statement or description of the
accused to the police due to her mental illness.
A woman officer has been entrusted with the investigation. She has roped in
medical experts who are trying to use their techniques and experience to get
the survivor to recollect the crime incident and description of the accused. As
of now, the Dindoshi police has no suspects in the case.
