RAIPUR: Korba police lodged FIR against a baiga (self-proclaimed healer) and
detained him on Friday, two months after he stabbed a mentally-challenged woman
in Koriya district with hot iron rod on pretext of exorcising spirits.
The incident took place when Sidhnath Singh from Khadgawan village of Koriya
district took his wife Sumitra Bai (38) to Safed Singh at Pasan in Korba
district for treatment of her mental illness.
Safed Singh stabbed her all over the body and asked them to return, promising
that Sumitra would recover soon. He told them that she was possessed by evil
spirits.
But Sumitra's condition deteriorated further due to burns and she was admitted
to hospital, where she died on January 27. Her husband Sidhnath reported the
matter to Koriya police and a zero FIR was lodged against Safed Singh.
Two months later, cops woke up and a formal FIR was lodged at Pasan police
station in Korba and police, till Friday, said he was on the run. Explaining
the delay in lodging FIR and subsequent arrest, Korba SP Amreesh Mishra told
TOI, "It was not a direct murder but death due to false treatment. Post mortem
report, medical approvals and paper work takes time. Preparation of case diary
from spot of death takes time."
Several incidents in past show how children and women are often stabbed with
hot rods or burnt with incense sticks pushed in their face and stomach by
'baigas' and tantric, causing their death.
