I found the following in one of the Linux usenet newsgroups (forgot which one),
but the links should help us get started.
| Good News. We will start having regular installfests in Manhattan. The
| first one will be on Sunday, March 2, 2003 at 16 West 32nd St in Manhattan.
| | The installfest will run from 10:00am until 4:00pm. An installfest is a
| gathering where people help each other install Free Software, especially
| GNU/Linux, on their computers. The most important thing to do in
| preparation is to backup any data you have on your computer that you might
| need in the future. It is also important to check your hardware so you
| know what you have. You should prepare a checklist (see below.)
|
| Bring your computer and the software you want to install (if you don't have
| any, some distributions will be available at the installfest). If you have
| particular non-standard peripherals you want to get working you might want
| to bring them too. Be sure to have a checklist of what you brought to make
| sure you have everything with you when you leave. You may want to just
| come and watch -- that is fine too.
|
| Naturally, the installfest is free and open to all.
|
| The following link should prove useful in getting ready for the
| installfest:

|
| And there is the checklist from our webpage:
|
| http://www.eskimo.com/~lo/linux/checklists.html
|
|
| Disasters can happen.
|
| Important: Everything done to/with any computer at any Install Fest,
| and in particular, at this Install Fest, is done at the
| specific request of the owner of the computer. As with
| all human endeavor, there is some risk of catastrophe.
| Back up all your data, before coming to the Fest! In addition,
| make a list of all hardware and media you bring to the Fest,
| and check that you have all your hardware and media when you
| leave the Fest.
