I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving. Anyway, after all the
presentations and discussions about virtualization, I decided to give
VMware a try, and I was really impressed with it. Two tips for anybody
doing this: One, if you're going to install your guest OS from CDs, all
you need is the free VMware Server, not the player, and at least one
serial number, which is also free. Two, if your host OS is Mandriva
2008.0, you'll need to install (at least I needed to install)
kernel-desktop-devel-2.6.22.9-1mdv-1-1mdv2008.0.i586.rpm from CD 3 --
'uname -r' will tell you which version to use. I installed Windows 2000
as my guest OS with no more problems than usual.

Question one, if I'm going to occasionally go online with the W2K VM
(through a DSL router), do I need all the antivirus, antispyware,
antiadware, etc. that I'd use on a real W2K machine? I'm guessing the
answer is "yes," unfortunately.

Two, if malware /should/ slip through, what's the worst that can
happen? I gather that my W2K VM could be hacked, but is there any way
that the rest of my system could be affected?

Three, I couldn't find this in the docs. Is there a relatively easy way
to move files between my virtual machine and my real machine? I know I
could burn files to a CD, but that sounds like the hard way.

Thanks in advance for any help with any of these!

Adam
