Hello all,
I am looking for an AJAX/DHTML solution to photo browsing and
tag/metadata editing. I wanted to have an always-on, shared solution, so
simply using iPhoto or Picasa with an SMB share on the server didn't seem
like the best direction to go in. Gallery <http://gallery.menalto.com/> +
ajaxian <http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:Themes:ajaxian> isn't enough
because the tags + meta data information can't be updated in an AJAX way,
and the gallery php scripts are a bit heavy for my little NSLU2 box.

An optimal solution for me is a (mostly) statically generated site,
that gets updated on a nightly basis to regenerate the pages. It would be
nice if the program could generate the thumbnails and (single) tag selection
pages automatically ( Maybe with symlinks to the main pages. ) I'd also
like to have a DB running that can take the these metadata updates ( I'm
thinking AJAX again here ) and if there have been any changes to the DB, a
cron job would regenerate the appropriate pages. I'd also like to be able
to view the pages in a Picasa-like-style.

I was thinking that an AJAX solution would be necessary, because I have
around 50,000 photos ( both mine and my wife's ) that I am trying to
organize and tag (People, Places, and generic Tags). Having the entire
collection in one web page would not be feasible, but maybe breaking it up
into monthly chunks would be the best way to handle this issue, which could
lead me to use a solution like this
one<http://www.gcmingati.net/wordpress/wp-content/lab/jquery/imagestrip/imageslide-plugin.html>
or
even this one <http://www.e2interactive.com/e2_photo_gallery/demo.php> , but
modified to show mini-thumbnails and present a grid-like view..

I've found some good starting points like this collection of DHTML/AJAX
Photo
Galleries<http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2007/05/18/30-best-solutions-for-image-galleries-slideshows-lightboxes/>,
but finding an already working solution for AJAX metadata/tag updates has
been more difficult than I originally thought.

I could custom code this, maybe using Adobe's
Spry<http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/demos/pe_gallery.html>,
or Rails, or use the possible solutions above, but I was hoping for
something that was already done so I could get this up in a week, rather
than a few months. :)

Any directions or thoughts are appreciated!

Thanks,
Trevor
