Thanks, everyone, for your advice! And special thanks to Jack for your
generous offer of repair.
Here's what I've decided to do: since it sounds like there's not much
hope of repair, and even before that I wasn't completely happy with the
limited expansion capabilities of the motherboard, and since it /does/
work with 1 GB RAM, I'll keep using it for a little longer. I'll just
have to put up with much slower processing time for graphics (because it
will probably be using swap), and limits on what I can do with a VM
(since it would take away RAM from the host).
I'm trying to put a positive spin on this, and so I've decided that it's
a good enough reason to get something better. I now have to decide
between getting just a new microATX motherboard, or one of those
"barebones" systems, or a whole new complete tower.
That leads me to a few questions about choosing a motherboard (if I
decide to go that route), which I've never done before. Can I assume
that any m/b with the same form factor will work? What else would I
have to buy for it besides a CPU and RAM? What else would I have to
look out for when choosing or installing one? Thanks again in advance,
everyone!
Adam
