I had forgotten about this post, but also wanted to give the veterines
a chance to speak up first.

I have a laptop that I can only get Ubuntu 7.10 to install directly
on, and I follow the upgrade roadmap myself with it:

7.10 -> 8.04:
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/upgrade-ubuntu-710-gutsy-gibbon-to-ubuntu-804-lts-hardy-heron-beta.html
8.04 -> 8.10:
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/upgrade-ubuntu-804-hardy-heron-to-ubuntu-810-intrepid-ibix.html
8.10 -> 9.04: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading

The only problem I had with this method was when Amarok got upgraded
from 1.4(ish?) to version 2, which had no podcast support and no
simple way to downgrade at the time, pushing me to fire up iTunes and
resubscribe to all my shows. I don't know if this is still a problem
with Amarok, I haven't been inconvenienced enough by booting into
windows just to sync my iPod enough yet to re-explore linux options.
