You do raise some valid issues about privacy. The Google people tell
the world that they guard their information about you carefully because
if you got uptight you would stop using Google, but they still have
to answer subpoenas and can't move to Liberia just to avoid governments
asking them for information.
For years I had a supervisor who had the same birthday I did but
wouldn't tell me her age. I hate to tell her that it's on the internet
for all to see.
Having an unlisted number only keeps it from your friends. If you have
ever applied for a credit card, you gave it to somebody who gave it to
Equifax that makes it available to "selected subscribers" (anybody who
wants it to sell you something.) for a fee.
And no company would try to sell products using a phone book. 99% of
them need to target better or just random dial seven digit phone numbers.
