I have the Addresso MCE (vista) remote control: $22 + shippng at newegg.

It works through a USB dongle that lights up when it is pressed and presents
itself to the computer as a USB keyboard. It has a built in mouse pad with 2
mouse buttons. The rest of the buttons show up as keypresses (use xev to see
them).
This setup does not require the use of LIRC, and most of its functionality
works out of the box and across the room... However all the buttons are not as
I would like. The option of using xmodmap to change their function is fine but
changes the function on the regular keyboard as well. The other option is to
change the key functions that myth responds to. I don't like either option and
am investigating (as time allows) whether I can setup X to use two keyboards
with different mappings. It may also be possible to use LIRC with it, but I'd
prefer not to if I don't need to.
If anyone has done this before, guidance would be welcome.
