In regards to public schools I think computer programming is a hard
nut to crack. When I took it the language of choice was qbasic. I
learned some stuff but it was disappointing to look at doom and then
the crap I wrote. You could look at the nibbles and bananas examples
and realize it was never going to be what you dreamed, and there was a
ton of code just for those! I love pcs but never learned how to code
and to me that's one of the issues. Coding is only a part of computing
and we all know computers aren't for everyone, programming even less
so. But that's all they really taught. I grew up in jersey so it may
be different in new york with boces, but there was a typing class for
many of the grades and programming for high school depending on the
availability. Most schools have some video games for grade schools
then take them away in middle school and high school and teach kids
office and not even well just really basic stuff. After grade school
the only kids that really learn about computers are the one that learn
about proxies and how to bypass local security policies.
