I'd like to add one more task to the always on ssh server. Add NUT (network ups tools).
I know 512MB is limited for storage, but there are many useful OS footprints that will fit. I have been working with the WebDT366 with 512MB Flash and only 256MB RAM. We are running Debian5 with LXDE, Opera, Wicd, to name a few apps. If my broadband modem had Linux drivers, I could use the USB port and LAN port for router/firewall services. I just never investigated how few/many modems are supported in Linux.
