Something I recently ran across is Drupal Gardens which is Drupal 7 as a service (http://www.drupalgardens.com/). You can start a basic drupal website for no cost (they run some banner ads on your site), and upgrade from there. This is similar to the wordpress.com hosting that many people use.

This is not what you want if you want to install lots of modules, and customize what's going on behind the scenes, but as a starting point this may be appropriate for some people. They also make it easy for you to export your site so you could host it yourself, i.e the freedom to leave.
