The inspiration for this is that I am a retired elementary school teacher and this is how a good elementary school room operates. Multiple activities go on in the same room at the same time. I think that we can and should do more than just sit in the empty room for an hour.

Maybe we could use 5 to 6 PM as a place where people can get help with their systems. Maybe this is the way that we can accommodate the basic users without boring the experts to death. They would bring their complete systems, set them up in the back of the room and our geniuses would show them why a video stream isn't working with Dragon Player or why they can't save a read only spreadsheet, that sort of basic thing.

They would be in the back of the room so that they could keep working after the program started. But we would have a cut off time for starting so that they would only run past 6 PM if it was a bigger job than they thought it would be.

There probably would only be time to do new installs of Ubuntu, because it practically self configures. If someone wanted to install something else, he would be told to do a rough install and then the expert in residence could start right with configuration issues at 5 PM.

QUESTIONS WE NEED TO ASK

How many plugs are back there? Could we set up enough surge suppressors and systems without blowing a fuse? Could we keep them from becoming a distraction after the program began? Could we keep them from delaying the start of the program?

We would need to set up a schedule to make sure that we had at least one expert in residence. New users (I don't like the term newbees) are sometimes better at helping other new users than experts but they are very inefficient as they usually have to trial and error everything.

When I first started using Linux, the guy who offered to teach me spend half a week trying to figure out why he couldn't get a win modem to work with Linux.

Because of budget cutbacks the Library helpdesk is no longer going to be
staffed until 6pm, so they've asked that, starting in April, someone get
to the library site at 5pm so their staff can leave when they stop being
paid.

Before anyone gets the wrong idea, MHVLUG will continue to start at 6pm,
as always.

However, given that at least myself, and possibly others, are going to
be there at 5pm for the room handoff, I'm open to the idea of using that
time before the meeting start at 6pm in some other productive manner.

If anyone has ideas or suggestions, please post here or email me directly.

        -Sean

I only send from this address. Anything sent from another address might not
have been sent by me. Google reports that attempts are still being made to get
access to my accounts. I have deleted all contacts from Google to try and fix
this problem.
