For a little more on this topic (and hopefully further discussion), check out the "Opinions Wanted on Window Managers" thread I started on this list at http://mhvlug.org/pipermail/mhvlug/2009-December/029439.html and the responses to it. I was looking for something lighter than the Mandriva default of KDE. After considering the suggestions here and in the Usenet newsgroup alt.os.linux.mandriva , and playing around with the dozen or so available in the Mandriva repositories, I chose Xfce4. I think I would have been equally happy with about a half-dozen others.
I like Xfce4 because it uses less RAM and is faster than KDE or Gnome, but all the features i want seem to be supported (and configurable) in it. There are also numerous apps and add-ons for it in Mandriva's repositories and elsewhere, and it's popular enough so that there's a user base and some user support out there.
