Like most if not all of you, I am technical support for friends family and co-workers. We all get asked over and over for "free" copies of MS Windows and MS Office because of some need or another. My policy is and will always be, "I can not provide you with copies of software in which you did not pay for" ... Giving people copies and license ID's is illegal, don't do it.
So I like most D/L and install LibraOffice <http://www.libreoffice.org/>for thoes people ( I've been using it myself for about 2 years, it's been solid and get's the job done ) But just last week I got a lecture from my wife about how "Office does not work and I'm throwing this @#$$%$%#$^ laptop out the window .... " So when she was not around I logged in with her ID and discovered what the issue was... she had ignored libreoffice and found a hidden copy of "MS Office via one click interface". So basically this copy of MS Office was not really on the computer but cloud based. Thus if she did not have WiFi conductivity it would not work, and thus the utter frustration. Solution? uninstall "MS one click" and setup LibreOffice to act like old MS Office: 1) After cleaning up the system install LibreOffice to be the default Office application. 2) For every shortcut add "-nologo" libreoffice3.6 --writer %U -nologo libreoffice3.6 --calc %U -nologo libreoffice3.6 --impress %U -nologo 3) Run libreoffice and modify the settings: Tools => Load/Save => General at the bottom of the right side you will find the section "Document type" for each of: Set to: Text document Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP/2003 Spreadsheet Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP/2003 Presentation Microsoft PowerPoint 97/2000/XP/2003 Now it works with all the "MS Office" files on the system and loads when you double click on them. It will save to a format that the people she works with uses. With no start-up logo, it appears to be an old version of MS Office but a welcome layout ( no one likes that new fanged ribbon interface ) So far so good, fools gold that looks like real thing, I won't tell what I did ... if you don't.
