It's a new year, 2014! Time to get your digital credentials in order! We will be holding a key-signing party on the March 5, 2014 meeting ( our anniversary meeting! ) What is a key-signing party => http://cryptnet.net/fdp/crypto/keysigning_party/en/keysigning_party.html
So it's time to start talking about GPG! ( http://www.gnupg.org/ ) Step one, you need a key pair if you don't have one! Since mine was old and only 1024 bits I created an new one following this: https://alexcabal.com/creating-the-perfect-gpg-keypair/ In today's world 4096 is the way to go! I suggest that you also look at this: https://we.riseup.net/riseuplabs+paow/openpgp-best-practices The only thing that is missing from the above instructions is the export of the public key to a key server. For our party we will be using the HKPS transport server pool: ~/.gnupg/gpg.conf: keyserver hkps://hkps.pool.sks-keyservers.net keyserver-options ca-cert-file=/path/to/CA/sks-keyservers.netCA.pem You can get the CA from => https://sks-keyservers.net/sks-keyservers.netCA.pem My new key pair is uploaded and you can get it if you want to test getting keys: 2190E068 Which should get key 2190E068: "Joseph T Apuzzo (Joe Apuzzo) < [email protected]>" You can also place your ASCII public key on the server via there web page: https://sks-keyservers.net/i/ This is just to start the conversation and get everyone up to speed with pub/private key pairs leading up to a key-signing ( web of trust ). In today world you really do need a digital signature. A good example is github and signing code and or changes. Also if you want to prove things occurred like a scientific discovery check out: http://cryptostamp.net/ Which I will most likely expand on as a lightning talk ( to promote the key-signing PARTY! ) -- Joe /** ** Joseph T Apuzzo ** GPFS SME (Linux, Windows, AIX), Linux LPI-c1 ** http://www.linkedin.com/in/japuzzo/ ** GPG key: 2190E068 @ sks-keyservers.net **/
