FDDI is possible, but at a guess switched Ethernet is most common in
buildings (cat-5 or fiber between floors, cat-5 for floor cabling).
Campus-wide or larger networks definitely should use some sort of
fiber optic transmission, be it ATM or whatever. AFAIK a backbone is
simply a high-bandwidth network that distributes data to smaller
distribution points, e.g. building and floor distributors (can't
remember the right word).
