NetBIOS names exist in an entirely different namespace than DNS. In
particular, NetBIOS names do not have domains at all (in the naming
sense). Appending a *DNS* domain name to a *NetBIOS* name is completely
inappropriate.
NetBIOS was not designed to be used with DNS at all, but was grudgingly
adapted to be able to use DNS *protocols* in spite of being a different
*naming system*. I imagine Microsoft is quite happy to see people have
problems when they dare to pollute their Microsoft purity with foreign
protocols from the IETF. :-)
Of course it's often (but not always) the case that the NetBIOS name and
the DNS name are the same, in which case that lookup may be meaningful in
some contexts. But when specifically trying to look up a NetBIOS name,
applying default domains is incorrect. I believe the lookups from port
137 involve names know to be NetBIOS names.
