Do you see checksum errors in the link stats? That's usually a sign of
serial overruns.
Although theoretically compressed data should be less subject to overruns
due to being more or less limited to the real modem speed, the modem might
still send the data in full-speed bursts that are just as subject to
overruns as continuous full-speed data. Note that third-party serial
cards are still somewhat subject to interference from heavy native display
DMA, albeit less so than the built-in port.
BTW, does the MFC3 support 76.8K, and if so have you tried it? Some
modems don't support it, but the Courier does.
