If you're trying to check data reliability, try doing a bunch of browsing
and then check the stats for the link with "MiamiNetStat -sL <interface>".
If you have a large number of FCS (checksum) errors, you're probably
getting data overruns on the serial port.
To check the actual line quality, you need to look at stats in the modem
itself (with a comm program after disconnectinhg), since it covers up the
errors via its own retransmissions. How you do this (or if it's even
possible) depends on the modem. For example:
