There needs to be different numbers in the IPs outside of the subnet
/mask/ (in the 255 bits of the string).
e.g. These are on different subnets:
IP: 192.168.0.1 Mask: 255.255.255.0
& IP: 192.168.1.x Mask: 255.255.255.0
There aren't (they're on the same sub-net):
IP: 192.168.0.1 Mask: 255.255.255.0
& IP: 192.168.0.3 Mask: 255.255.255.0
IP: 192.168.0.1 Mask: 255.255.0.0
& IP: 192.168.1.x Mask: 255.255.0.0
("x" meaning any number between 1 and 253. 0, 254, and 255 all have
special meanings, if I remember correctly, in the last number in IP
strings.)
IPs on a different subnet will be routed, by the gateway, *if* you
actually have a gateway computer. Just having any computer, in the
middle, that's not set up as a gateway, won't route them through.
