I think that the prices on uber-econo cars are a little out of hand...
but they seem to be sustaining at that level. I bought my CRX HF last
year, and prices on those have jumped from $1500 to over $5000 for
similar car/similar condition.

I think if you are buying one now, you kinda missed the boat. The last
logical point of entry to get one of these cars was 6 months ago... but
there no telling what lunacy is to come as fuel prices continue to rise.
While KBB does not show the current price levels for these cars, it is
very real in the marketplace. I've actually had half a dozen people call
me about my CRX and say "how much do you want for it - name your price".

I've been very tempted to triple my money on the car... but the problem
is, I've really grown to like the dumb car. It's super cheap to run, and
is surprisingly fun for 60hp. It has some interesting engine technology
in it, too. I did a valve adjustment yesterday and found that it's got
roller cams, really narrow cam lobes and low-tension springs. With the
sparkplugs out, I could rotate the engine easily with one finger. Heck,
maybe that just means it's worn out. :)
Just thinking - If the HF can get 50mpg with a dumb OBD1 ECU and single
wire O2... imagine what it could do with a megasquirt and wide band!
