I have 10 different stands.. yes, I know, that's a lot.. but when you have
a car up on 4 of them, it's nice to have extras! Plus I only purposefully
bought stands twice, the others came with a jack or seat or something else.

2 ton
2 x gray cheapo ones from Pep Boys that came with some china 2 ton jack
4 x gray cheapo ones from Autozone, I think

3 ton
2 x black Sears that came with a 3 ton jack/rolling seat combo
2 x orange china ones that came with some other jack years ago - Very
Harbor Freight looking but not from there

I don't own a set of "quality" stands.. but I also don't load the ones I
have to more than 50-60% of the rating, either. I have no worries crawling
under a car on 4 of these and getting crazy with prybars.. With the sub up
right now each is holding around 600 pounds or so out of a possible 6000.
:) They do vary in height, mine range maybe +/-2" to each other so you can
find lower ones. The higher the rating, usually the taller the stand.

As to the height, I jack the car up dead center if I can.. below the oil
pan on the front, and under the rear diffy in the back as opposed to from
the sides.. Hardest part with a lowered car is you have to drive onto some
2x4's first to get the bloody jack in there. ;)

Last thing, I got some leftover carpet squares from work when they
remodeled, cut it into a strip and electrical taped them to the top of the
stand.. helps to form better to uneven surfaces (bottom of control arms,
sway mounts, whatever) and also helps minimize slippage once the car is
set, and lowers likelihood of denting from hard edges... something to
consider but I recommend it highly. Metal on Metal can be slippery, the
carpet helps to grip.

Hey everyone,
I'm looking for some quality jackstands for my NA. What stands are
people satisfied with?
I checked out four local autoparts stores and everyone seems to stock
stands with a minimum height of 1 foot. I feel a little uncomfortable
jacking one side of the car one foot into the air while the other side
is still on the ground. Is this concern unwarranted?
