I spent my time in the in the mid 70's and early 80's while in the USAF
at the Cheyenne Mountain War Room (2500 ft underground) as well at the
8th AF HQ War Room (Bunker). I participated in many war games. While
Columbus was a target in our games, so was every other American city
over 100K population.
Typically 2000-3000 incoming war heads rained in the lower 48 in under
30 minutes. (Think about where you'd place 50 nukes in each state -
easy to run out of targets!) Concentrations were most dense on both
coasts, Montana, N & S Dakota, Missouri, Arkansas, Nebraska & Kansas (
radar bases, military bases, and missle silos). However every city over
100K had 2 nukes aimed at it. Most infrastructure was targeted at
well... Grand Coulee Dam, Hoover Dam, etc as well at reconsitution
locations, and coal and oil fired electrical plants.
Wasn't a lot left after 27 minutes....

Hmmm, I always wonder about that Bryan as I grew up in Columbus and
we always heard as kids that "Columbus was a top 5 target" for a
ruskie nuke as we have the supersecret Battelle institutute that does
govt projects/research and god knows what else.
Urban legends; maybe that is just a human condition to create a rumor?
maybe Ohio was going to be wiped out first.
anyone else grow up in another "Top 10 Nuke Me" city? feel free to go
offlist.

It's funny you should mention that. I grew up in Canton, OH, and the
Timken plant was the reason Canton was in the top 10 of targets the
Russians would have wiped off the map if push came to shove. Probably
not nearly as trouble by the time I was born, but it was a well-known
fact.

I think with the Timken wheel bearings it was a material issue. 8
identical bearings on a GTX two per corner I replaced them all
with Timken didn't look at them other than Timken was stamped on
them I had two failures and I got to looking closer. The two that
failed on different corners were stamped Timken Mexico. Two were
stamped Timken Australia and the other 4 were stamped Timken
Japan. They all came out of boxes labeled Timken USA but its
really getting so nothing gets made in the USA any more.
