The best guess that I could come up with is:

The water pump developed a leak (rusty stains all over the engine especially
around the pump). They replaced some hoses, timing belt, and cam seals
(probably some other stuff too). They gouged the hell out of the cam shaft
and buttoned the car up for a quick sale. My girl bought the car without
checking it out and that is how I got it (no oil, leaky seal, rusty stains).
