NBs typically run 15 volts, so the voltage is fine. As far as the hot battery,
I have seen Optimas run hot when they won't take a charge. Or they may all run
hot and we don't spend much time in the trunk while we drive. A trunk monkey
would know...

I believe 14.4 is fine.  The gell cells take a little more voltage than lead
acid so 14.4 is spec. Shouldn't be a problem.
Lastest and not so greatest.........my alternator seems to be over charging. I
have made it 650 miles into an 800 mile leg. I am going to sit for a bit to let
it cool off. The battery is an Optima Red Top.
