Which Link? The new Link G4 ECUS seem very powerful and affordable, and is
available in a P&P. There are 3 versions, Storm, Extreme, Plug & Play (90-97
Miatas). From what I can tell, they are nothing like the original (G1) Link
systems.

Link is also the manufacturer of Vi-PEC ECUs, which offer the same 3 models
with different names: V44, V88, Plug & Play (90-97 Miatas).

Difference between the Links and VI-PECS appears to be the software & support.
Hardware is largely the same, but firmware & software are different. Vi-PEC is
alleged to be more advanced, as the company was founded by a former Autronic
dealer who contracted Link to produce the ECUs.

I am close to pulling the trigger on a Vi-PEC. Even the entry-level V44
includes such features as sequential fuel, flat-shift, many different variable
cam controls (including Mazda VViT), 3D-6D fueling, traction control. The V88
is exactly the same, but adds extra inputs/outputs, knock control, and native
control for Drive-By-Wire.

What were we talking about? Oh yea, 1999 heads. No idea what they are going
for, but would be interested in a VViT head (see previous paragraphs for
reason!). :o)

Actually, I'll just change the subject line.

        MS and Link cannot.

Controlling VVT needs closed loop control - i.e. detect phase then
adjust solenoid duty cycle as needed.

There isn't a 1 to 1 correspondence between VVT solenoid and cam phase.
The VVT mechanism integrates the solenoid / spool valve position over time to
result in phase.

                AEM controls VVT just fine,
                Adaptronic as well
perhaps even Link can do it- using the Boost Control output-
and using a "ball/spring" for boost control instead

MS surely can be configured to run VVT

Since we already know Hydra does,
that pretty much covers typical install.

Given that there are less ECU's out there that can
control VVT than not, I'd say no. The most prized part of a 01-05 engine is
the bottom end.

Is an 01 head and intake manifold worth more?

even more if intake manifold is included.
