FWIW, code 1 != code 10.
Das CEL blinkenlight blinken quicker for the ones digits than for the
tens digit (0.4 seconds versus 1.2 seconds).
It was really code 1 and the culprit was the coil pack (one of them has
a broken casing).
I guess I have gotten out of practice wrenching on cars thanks to grad
school...
Patient is a 1994 Miata
I started it up to move it into the garage and left it to idle a few
minutes to let everything warm up since it had not been driven in a
while (interior being reinstalled to return to stock and sell it)..
...and the car just "died"...
I thought I smelled burned electronics in the cabin.
No check-engine light with key on. No fuel pump operation when forced
via diagnostic connector.
I found the 15A "Engine" fuse in the driver kick panel blown (replaced
it, old fuse flew somewhere up in the dash, so I could not confirm it
blew).
However, CEL and fuel pump operation were restored.
The car sputters when attempting to start it (starts/runs for a second
or two and then dies).
Originally, I thought it was code 1 (coils) but after unplugging the
coils and swapping with another set, I then get a short duration flash
for the coils and a long single flash (code 10) for the IAT in the MAF
and the same symptoms.
The appropriate terminals at ECU show proper resistance per the FSM
which matches the pins at MAF (2.5 k-ohms, within specs).
So, it appears as if the only thing left in the troubleshooting "tree"
is that the ECU is toast. No visible damage to the PCB or components
when the case was opened, though.
Any further thoughts about some particular foible I'm not aware of or
do I have a pretty conclusive diagnosis? It just seems like a very
odd thing to have fail, although it is 16 years old.
I don't have a '94 ECU (have '90, though) or MAF that I can swap in to
confirm diagnosis, so I will have to ask around locally and then I
guess, ask around to acquire a replacement.
