I have a 94 Miata; I have hade some problems with it. It has 125K on it the
compression is quite good at 150, 150, 149, 149 respectively. I changed the
timing belt 300 miles ago. The one on it did not look bad but was somewhat
stretches. My main concern is when I set the engine to TDC the exhaust cam
gear marking was off by 3 teeth counterclockwise. The engine sounded OK
except for a knocking noise from the alternator. I set the timing marks as
per the manual. The engine started right off and I was able to set the
timing to 10 deg. BTDC. I ran it for 100 miles then moved the timing to 14
deg. BTDC. The engine ran good for the first 50 miles, but developed a miss
off idle. I just checked the timing and it is right on 14 deg, BTDC.

Second I changed the alternator to one I had that has only 2000 miles on it.
And new drive belts. After tightening the belts the knock was back. I
loosened the drive belt on the alternator/ water pump, and the knock went
away. Is this common?

Does anyone have something I can try?
