Thanks for the help everyone. I didn't think they were compatible.

The other night the alternator started to make a groaning sound, not the
high pitch squeal like a belt was loose. The sound went away after about 5
minutes and since I was a hour and a half from home, I took the chance that
she would make it. The sound came and went as I was driving. I noticed it
the sound when I turned the heater control to 2, when I put it back on off
the sound went away. When I was about 15 minutes from the house, I noticed
that the dashboard lights and the headlights were starting to get dim. But I
didn't get the warning light in the cluster at any point.

I put the battery on the charger to top it off, then took the car to
Autozone. They tested the alternator and battery and said that they both
were good. It's the original alternator with 181K miles and a Optima yellow
top battery. I also have the Link computer.

What everybody else said. Ecu controlled, wrong (not interchangeable)
pulley.
What is it that you're "feeling"? Fewer electrons in the air?

Subject: Alternator

Simple question, is a alternator from a '02 Miata compatible with a '91
Miata?

I have a feeling that the alternator on my 1.6 is on the way out and a
local guy is willing to give me his '02 unit. I just want to make sure
they are interchangeable.

Thanks,
Lloyd
