Could someone enlighten me a little - 

I thought alternators required external voltage (a battery) to energize
the field windings before it would produce electricity.  No battery and
the alternator won't produce... and engine won't run.  Generators don't
need the battery as they have physical magnet to produce the field..

Is the above a true statement??
