Never had a 6 speed Miata..so (shocking) my advice may be completely 
irrelevant and useless if that is the case.

Oh, wait, I DO have a 6 speed one.. just doesn't run yet (and it's a 
Pontiac T56, heh).

Not if it's a 6 speed.  Dry turret no oil.  Isn't a 2001 LS a 6 speed. 
Sure it's not engine oil leaking down the back of the engine and onto the

Umm.. the shifter? 

:) 

Take console out of car (philips screws and shift knob), 4 10mm head bolts 
holds outer boot, then 3 10mm head bolts hold the shifter in.. the shifter 
has 50cc (IIRC) fluid in it.
