I just fixed this problem on my car. It was the sway bar mounts. They crack and break. Mine started with creaking and eventually went to popping as they broke through.
Replacements are available from FM for about $160. Installation was easier than I thought, but does require removal of radiator and drilling out some welds. If you look under the hood where the sways are attached, you might be able to see them move or see the cracks when you lean on a corner.
