Is it an Adaptec card?  What you may find is what I found trying a 
combo FW/USB 2.0 card in a Umax C600--the card was engineered as a 
PCI 2.2 standard card and thus not compatible with 2.1 or earlier PCI 
slots.  As for me, FW works but USB doesn't.  Likely the e-docs in 
pdf format don't really say.  You'll have to check out the detailed 
specs on the product page.  Pre-rev.B beige G3s are 2.1 compliant and 
the earlier 6400-era machines are 2.0 compliant.  Simply put, the 
newer cards, especially the connectivity cards, are troublesome. 
xlr8yourmac has quite the page when it comes to FW cards.
