Hi out there in 'Unix' land <grin>.
Not being one of those initiated into the internals of OSX and the
like, perhaps someone can explain something for me.

I've been experimenting with some of the 'free' memory display
programs that I found on Version Tracker. The one that seems to tell
the most is one called "System Manager" by a Jeff Parsons. It shows
that I have 512 mb on my computer running OSX 10.2.3. It shows I
currently have 7mb free, 160mb inactive, 293 active and 53 wired and
then some misc small numbers. If I close a program or two, then I get
94mb free, 85 inactive, and 279 active. I guess my questions are
these: what's the difference between free and inactive? While I can
guess that 'active' means it's being used right now but then what is
'wired'?
I've noticed that 'some' programs give back memory as soon as they
close a file (Graphic Converter for instance) while others don't seem
to ever release it.
Any light that anyone can shed would be much appreciated.
