I have one of the original beige G3s (no extra memory or anything). I don't use it much and I was curious if it would be possible to install some variant of Unix on it. Duane,
My first installation of Linux was with LinuxPPC 2000 on a G3 laptop. It was nice for a first time because it had an easy installer and you could keep the Mac OS in place as well. At startup you could choose between the two systems. It was pretty easy to install actually and would get you familiar with the file structure and commands.
It's pretty old but it looks like it's still available for $3.95 from http://www.linuxcentral.com/catalog/index.php3?prod_code=D000 -071&id=C1CXTrnQY6KCx
Here's an article on LEM about installing it. http://www.lowendmac.com/meta/2k1214.html
Good luck,
