Ben, Thanks! EPrints may have come up in the mailing list before I subscribed but it looks like it hasn't been discussed much. I would love to see a project like that generating microformats, but even their present one-page-per item setup seems like it could be very useful in automatically grabbing citation information.
I've put the example you sent along on the wiki here: http://microformats.org/wiki?title=citation-examples#EPrints.org with a brief analysis and a link to the full markup. -mike On 8/22/06, Ben O'Neill <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:
I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, but EPrints [1] uses the <link> and <meta> tags in the headers of the page to put across the information, e.g. http://eprints.ecs.soton.ac.uk/12070/ Here's a sample of the data: <link href="http://purl.org/DC/elements/1.0/" rel="schema.DC" /> <meta content="Winnowing Ontologies based on Application Use" name="DC.title" /> <meta content="Alani, Harith" name="DC.creator" /> <meta content="Harris, Stephen" name="DC.creator" /> <meta content="O'Neil, Ben" name="DC.creator" /> I really don't like this method as the data is totally hidden from the end user (which I believe is against "the microformat way") unless it is repeated in the page later on, so it'd be great to have a citation microformat to show to the authors of software like this. I think this specific format is part of the Open Archives Initiative [2] but I'm not sure on that. The point of this email is to bring EPrints and OAI to your attention incase you were unaware of them. Quite a lot of academic sites are starting to use the system [3] so getting microformats into EPrints and similar software could be a big boost. Handily I work at the university that EPrints is developed at so I'd love to see the citation microformat move forward to give me something to show the guys here.
