Re.: Pennstock size.

If you have access to Machinery's Handbook (try your local Library or a
machine shop), there are tables for flow and power for different sizes of
pipe & Head. These tables are located near the back on the book.

Example:
Theoretical Velocity of water due to head in Feet:
6' head = 19.66 feet/ second = 1077'/minute
7' head =21.23 feet/second = 1274'/minute.
1274 - 1077 = 197feet/minute difference.
197'/min * .6667= 131.34'/min + 1077'/min =1208'/min.

Velocity '/min times Area in Square feet = Volume in Cubic feet /minute.
(this is the usual unit used by engineers)

1 Cubic foot = 7.48 Gallons

The area of a10 inch pipe(in square feet is)0.545 square feet.

1208'/min * 0.545 square feet = 658.36 cubic feet/min.

658.36 cubic feet * 7.48 gallons =4924.5328 gallons.

There are also formulas to compensate for bends & length of pipe.

Another good book is: Marks' Mechanical Engineers Handbook.
It has a whole section on Water Power.

However both books are very expensive.
